Constellation Takes Minority Stake in El Silencio Mezcal

April 16, 2019

Constellation Brands has acquired a minority interest in Los Angeles-based El Silencio Mezcal.

The investment was made through Constellation’s venture capital group for an undisclosed sum.

Known for its Ensamble and Espadin mezcals, El Silencio will use the funds to invest in infrastructure and growth, as well as an extended cocktail program and other marketing efforts.

While mezcal remains tiny compared to its better-known cousin, Tequila, its consumption has risen dramatically over the past five years, with 288,000 cases depleted in the U.S. in 2018, according to Impact Databank—up from just 65,000 cases in 2013. That rapid progress has seen a torrent of new entrants to the category, including Diageo’s Casamigos mezcal, Pernod Ricard’s Del Maguey, Bacardi-marketed Ilegal, and William Grant-marketed Montelobos, among others.—Daniel Marsteller
