News Briefs for April 30, 2019April 30, 2019
•Wente Family Estates has been named the U.S. importer for Argentina’s Bodega Cuarto Dominio. Located in the Uco Valley of Mendoza, Cuarto Dominio focuses on Malbec from high altitude vineyards. Wente will initially launch four Malbecs from the winery in the U.S.: the flagship offering from the family’s La Consulta vineyard; Chento, selected from three parcels of La Consulta; Tolentino, blended from the family’s vineyards; and Lote 44, billed as a fruit-forward Malbec.
•Kentucky’s Bardstown Bourbon Co. has launched Fusion Series No.-1, the first whiskey released by the distillery under its own name. The 49.45% abv whiskey is a blend of 2-year-old wheated Bourbon and high-rye Bourbon—both distilled at Bardstown Bourbon Co.—with an 11-year-old sourced Kentucky Bourbon. The whiskey, which retails for around $60 a 750-ml., is now available in Kentucky and Indiana through RNDC, and will launch in California, Florida, Tennessee, and Illinois in the coming months. Prior to the release of Fusion Series No.-1, the distillery exclusively produced whiskey for other companies through its Collaborative Distilling Program. Constellation Brands is a minority investor in Bardstown Bourbon Co.
•St. Helena, California-based Rutherford Wine Company will launch two new wines under its Four Virtues brand. Four Virtues Bourbon Barrel Aged Cabernet Sauvignon ($20 a 750-ml.) is a 2016 vintage sourced from the Lodi AVA, aged in French and American oak, and finished in heavily charred oak Bourbon barrels. The other new wine is a 2017 Pinot Noir ($20). Both new entries join the original Four Virtues Bourbon Barrel Aged Zinfandel that the company introduced last year. Rutherford also produces a number of other brands, including Rutherford Ranch, Predator, and Two Range, among others.
•Constellation Brands is rolling out its Corona Refresca flavored malt beverage label nationally. The 4.5% abv range includes Passionfruit Lime, Guava Lime, and Coconut Lime flavors, which each have 199 calories a 12-ounce serving. Passionfruit Lime and Guava Lime are available in 6-packs of cans retailing at $10, while a 12-pack featuring all three flavors will retail at $17. The national launch is being backed by national TV spots, digital, out-of-home, and social media initiatives. Last year, the Refresca line reached 59,000 cases, according to Impact Databank. Corona continues to drive growth within Constellation’s beer business, with the brand family’s total volume crossing 150 million (2.25-gallon) cases in the company’s fiscal year through February.Subscribe to Shanken News Daily’s Email Newsletter, delivered to your inbox each morning.
