August 23, 2019•Napa Valley-based Beaulieu Vineyard has released a special edition of its Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, made in celebration of the bottling’s 80th anniversary. The forthcoming 2016 vintage of the wine will be packaged in a commemorative gift box and sold nationwide for a retail price of $150. Accompanying the anniversary bottling is the 80th Anniversary Georges de Latour Experience, which will be held at the winery for a limited time and will feature a retrospective tasting of library vintages, current releases, and wines currently aging in barrel. Beaulieu Vineyard is part of the Treasury Wine Estates portfolio.
•Foley Family Wines has acquired two new vineyard properties: Huntington Hill Vineyards in Willamette Valley, Oregon and Chalk Ridge Vineyard in Russian River Valley, California. Financials were not disclosed. Huntington Hill is in the newly formed Van Duzer Corridor AVA and will support the Four Graces and Acrobat labels. It includes a total of 165 acres, of which 21 acres are planted, mostly to Pinot Noir. Foley sees potential to plant another 85 acres at the site. Chalk Ridge, a 64-acre vineyard in the Chalk Hill AVA, is planted to Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah and has historically supplied Kendall-Jackson, Sonoma-Cutrer, Dariush, and Duckhorn. Foley will use it to supply both the Chalk Hill and Roth Estate brands.
•Lapo Mazzei, patriarch of Tuscany’s Mazzei winemaking family, passed away August 20 at the age of 94 at his Fonterutoli estate just outside Castellina in Chianti. Mazzei served as chairman of his family’s three estates: Castello di Fonterutoli (Chianti Classico), Belguardo (Maremma), and Zisola (Noto, Sicily). The president of the Chianti Consortium for 20 years, Mazzei promoted the region on the international stage while helping to modernize and renovate his family estates. Those properties will now pass on to his sons Francesco and Filippo Mazzei, who have worked in close concert with him for decades. Mazzei’s U.S. importer is Taub Family Cos.
•Opici Wines has promoted Amanda Panicali to director of marketing. Panicali joined Opici two years ago after previously serving on the still wines team at Pernod Ricard. Over the past two years she has served as brand manager across Opici Wines’ proprietary and lifestyle brands like Âme du Vin Rosé, LaLuca Prosecco, and Julia James, in addition to agency brands such as Carpineto and El Coto de Rioja.
