•Spain’s Best Beer Inc., part of Mahou-San Miguel Group, has purchased a majority stake in Michigan’s Founders Brewing Co, according to a report in MiBiz. Pending regulatory approval, Best Beer Inc. will control 90% of Founders, up from its current 30% stake, the report said. Mike Stevens and Dave Engbers, who co-founded the brewery, will split the remaining 10% stake. The Spanish company’s investment will buy out dozens of minority local shareholders. The Founders leadership team is expected to stay in place, with day-to-day operations unchanged following the January 2020 completion of the deal. According the Brewers Association, Founders is the 14th-largest brewer in the U.S. market, including both craft and non-craft breweries.

•Vintage Wine Estates has named Bob Cabral as consulting winemaker for its Firesteed winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Cabral is best known for his work with Pinot Noir at Sonoma’s Williams Selyem Winery, and will consult on Firesteed’s Pinot Noir program. He’s been working with Vintage on their Splinter Spirits portfolio, which was acquired in 2017, and continues to serve as director of winemaking at Three Sticks Wines and Bob Cabral Wines. Firesteed, a top-selling Willamette Valley appellation Pinot Noir, retails for $17 a 750-ml.
