Wirtz Family Takes Ownership Of Missouri Wholesaler Major Brands

The Wirtz family is expanding its presence in the Missouri market’s wholesale tier, agreeing to acquire control of wine, spirits, and beer distributor Major Brands, in which it already held an undisclosed stake. The Wirtz family is acquiring the ownership shares of Major Brands CEO Sue McCollum, who will continue to lead the company.

McCollum is divesting her ownership in Major Brands in order to pursue philanthropic efforts including an LLC and a foundation focused on “addressing the issues of racial and gender inequity, persistent poverty, and lack of access to opportunities in her adopted hometown of St. Louis,” according to the company.

The Wirtz family initially gained an interest in Major Brands in 2014, when Major acquired Missouri Beverage, in which the Wirtzes held a minority stake. Major Brands’ portfolio includes labels from Beam Suntory, Pernod Ricard, Proximo Spirits, Stoli Group, and William Grant & Sons on the spirits side, as well as wines from Caymus, Cakebread, The Wine Group, Terlato, Constellation, Jackson Family, and Santa Margherita. The company serves more than 9,000 retail customers, with annual revenues estimated at more than $400 million.

Major Brands will remain separate from Breakthru Beverage, the multi-state distribution giant formed by the merger of the former Wirtz Beverage with Charmer Sunbelt in 2015.—Daniel Marsteller
