•Amazon has unveiled a new brick-and-mortar grocery concept, Amazon Fresh, with a 35,000-square-foot store in Los Angeles’ Woodland Hills neighborhood. Fresh will offer lower price points than existing Amazon grocery chain Whole Foods, stocking more mainstream products alongside Amazon private labels like Cursive wines, Happy Belly snacks, and a new range of Fresh-branded foods, CNBC reported. Fresh is intended to complement Whole Foods in Amazon’s grocery portfolio by appealing to a different audience, the company said.
•Chris Benziger is expanding his retail-focused Tribute brand into national distribution and adding two new varietals. Tribute ($20 a 750-ml.), which originally debuted in select accounts with a Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, will extend with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay early next year. Tribute is bottled in a proprietary mold adorned with a crest commemorating the Benziger family’s 40 years of winemaking. Chris Benziger is the youngest of the seven Benziger siblings and vice president of trade relations for the Glen Ellen, California-based winery, which The Wine Group acquired in 2015.
•Lawrenceburg, Indiana-based MGP has launched a new single barrel program for Rossville Union Straight Rye Whiskey. MGP worked with its retail and distribution partners to choose individual barrels of rye—distilled from one of its two rye mash bills—to be bottled-in-bond in personalized packaging. Going forward, MGP will offer Rossville Union single barrels once a year. The 50% abv whiskey is rolling out now to select retails across the U.S., with the whiskies retailing at around $50 a 750-ml.
•Terlato Wine Group has promoted Gaspar Roby to vice president, winemaking and viticulture. Roby previously was director of viticulture, responsible for all technical, operational, and financial aspects of more than 350 acres of family owned vineyards in Napa Valley and Red Mountain, Washington.
