Exclusive: Kentucky’s Liquor Barn Acquires J’s Liquors, Expanding Footprint

December 1, 2020

Kentucky beverage alcohol retail conglomerate Liquor Barn-Party Mart-DEP’S, owned by Blue Equity, LLC, has acquired longtime Kentucky retailer J’s Liquors Tasting Bar and Cheese Shop and J’s Liquors–West Parrish in Owensboro, Kentucky. The purchase price wasn’t disclosed. The acquisition adds two stores to the 20 currently operated by Blue Equity, including 16 Liquor Barn locations, three DEP’s Fine Wine & Spirits stores, and two Party Mart stores.

“We basically will blanket, for delivery and touchpoints, 90% of the state,” Jonathan Blue, chairman and managing director of Blue Equity, LLC, said of the acquisition. “Owensboro was a huge gap for us.” Blue Equity plans to integrate the J’s stores into the Liquor Barn franchise rather than keeping the J’s name. “We’ll change signage and logos,” he said, noting the new stores have similar layouts to existing Liquor Barn stores.

J’s Liquors has been in business more than 65 years, started by partners John “Hump” Tanner and Doc Oldham. Liquor Barn-Party Mart-DEP’S is acquiring the stores from the Oldham family, who has operated the stores for the past several decades. “The acquisition of J’s Liquors continues our quest to become the leading retailer for spirits, wine, beer, cigars, and specialty foods to our loyal and growing customer base in Kentucky,” Blue added.—Carol Ward
