News Briefs for January 14, 2021January 14, 2021
•A record-breaking snowstorm in Spain collapsed the cellar roof of one of Priorat’s leading wineries, Vall Llach, destroying fermentation tanks and other machinery and possibly the entire 2020, 2019, and 2018 vintages. The winery is located in the mountainous town of Porrera, which sits at an altitude of 1,036 feet and has a population of 445. The area sees small amounts of snow every two to three years, but this past weekend’s volume of snow hasn’t been seen since the 1950s. Wine Spectator has more.
•MGP Ingredients has announced the 2021 iteration of Rossville Union Rye’s single barrel release. This year, the company is offering rye whiskies distilled from three mashbills (up from two for the 2020 edition) and bottled at cask strength. The release is available to pre-order until March 15 and will be delivered to retailers and other accounts by August. MPG is hosting virtual tastings so that interested customers can choose their preferred mashbill and will also allow buyers to customize the whiskey’s label.
•Diageo-backed brand accelerator Distill Ventures is launching a video series highlighting world whiskies. Defined by Distill as whisky from anywhere other than Ireland, Scotland, Japan, or the U.S., the New World Whisky series will also feature certain unconventional expressions from the so-called Old World of whiskey, including Scottish rye or American single malt. The four-part series is free to watch on Distill Ventures’ website and features interviews with experts including Dawn Davies, head buyer at the Whisky Exchange, and Andy Gemmell, owner of The Gate in Scotland. Distill’s global whisky portfolio includes Stauning, Starward, and Westward Whiskey, among others.Subscribe to Shanken News Daily’s Email Newsletter, delivered to your inbox each morning.
