Amazon Opening More Grocery Locations, With Nearly 30 Planned Nationwide

March 12, 2021

Amazon has opened 11 grocery stores since September, continuing the tech behemoth’s push into physical retail. Since the first in its new line of Amazon Fresh stores opened in Los Angeles six months ago, 10 more have opened and at least an additional 28 are planned nationwide, according to reporting from Bloomberg. The stores mark Amazon’s latest attempt to capture a significant portion of grocery sales, an arena that has proven challenging despite the company’s $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods in 2017. The Amazon Fresh stores feature an extensive alcohol section among the approximately 15,000 stocked products.

Store locations, which range from 25,000-45,000 square feet, are targeted at areas with high Amazon Prime membership, which may fuel customer loyalty, Bloomberg noted. The company continues to experiment with cashier-less concepts in at least one location in Illinois, something it has pursued for several years since debuting the idea at a location near its offices in Seattle. The system uses extensive video coverage to track what customers place in their carts and charges the total to their Amazon accounts; however the system has struggled with accuracy in the past, notably when families shop together and children pick up and put down items.
