Southern Glazer’s Announces Retirement Of Steve Slater, Selects Cindy Leonard As SuccessorMay 11, 2021
Steve Slater, long-time champion of wine and an innovator in the distribution tier, will retire from Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits (SGWS) at the end of the year. He’s departing after 32 years in the distribution world, where he worked alongside leaders like Mel Dick to bring fine wine to an American market more accustomed to mass-market fare.
At SGWS, Slater helped oversee the launch of the company’s specialty wine companies in markets like Washington, Oregon, Illinois, Colorado and Florida. He served in numerous roles at SGWS, starting as a salesperson in California in 1989 and eventually becoming vice president, general manager of Southern Wine & Spirits’ California division, and ultimately executive vice president of the SGWS wine division.
Slater is succeeded by Cindy Leonard, who’s currently senior vice president, supplier management and business development at SGWS. In her new role—executive vice president, general manager, fine wine—Leonard will lead the company’s fine wine strategy and report to Mel Dick and chief sales and marketing officer Gene Sullivan.—Shane EnglishSubscribe to Shanken News Daily’s Email Newsletter, delivered to your inbox each morning.
