•Highland Park single malt Scotch whisky, part of the Edrington portfolio, will introduce Highland Park Cask Strength Release No. 2 in late October. Matured predominantly in Sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks and a small quantity of ex-Bourbon casks, the new expression was bottled at 63.9% abv and retails at $90 a 750-ml. Based in Kirkwall, Orkney, Highland Park also unveiled a new 50-year-old bottling earlier this year, priced at $30,000.
•A devastating wildfire has swept through parts of the Var region in Provence, leaving winegrowers reeling from the loss of buildings, equipment, and grapes just days before the 2021 harvest. “It’s been annus horribilis for French winegrowers. We’ve had frost, we’ve had hail and now wildfires,” said Eric Pastorino, president of the regional trade group Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins de Provence (CIVP). •Vineyard Brands has partnered with Enroot, a line of organic, non-alcoholic sparkling cold brew teas. Founded by Brad Pitt (with whom Vineyard Brands is already partnered on Miraval rosé from Provence), Cristina Patwa, and John Fogelman, Enroot includes five offerings: Rejuvenate Peach Hibiscus Jasmine Green Tea, Revitalize Raspberry Mint White Peony Tea, Relax Strawberry Lavender Rosemary Tulsi, Reenergize Mango Turmeric Ginger Guayusa, and Revive Apple Lemon Cayenne Yerba Mate. The teas retail at $25 a six-pack.
•Pennsylvania’s Yuengling has made landfall in the Texas market. Texas is the first state in The Yuengling Company’s joint venture of D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. and the Molson Coors Beverage Company, aimed at increasing Yuengling’s reach beyond its current 22-state East Coast footprint. Yuengling beers including Traditional Lager, Light Lager 99, Golden Pilsner, and Flight by Yuengling are now rolling out across the Texas market.
•Drinks industry executive Ian Crystal died tragically Friday night, August 20, at the age of 46 after an accident at New York’s CitiField. He fell 30 to 50 feet from a fifth-floor balcony during an intermission at the Dead & Company concert at CitiField and was pronounced dead at New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital. Crystal held a series of marketing roles with Moët Hennessy USA and Pernod Ricard before co-founding Evolution Spirits, known for the Monkey Rum brand, in 2015.
•Wilson Daniels is offering its Master Exam Scholarship in partnership with the Somm Foundation for the fourth consecutive year. The scholarship grants eight applicants a $2,000 subsidy towards the Master Sommelier and Master of Wine certifications.
