The 45th Annual Impact Marketing Seminar: Drinks Luminaries Convene At The Industry’s Signature SummitSeptember 30, 2021
While much has changed in the drinks business over the past year and a half, the annual gathering of industry titans at the Impact Marketing Seminar hasn’t skipped a beat, taking place yesterday for the 45th straight year. The industry’s top players convened at The Pierre in New York City for a packed program at the sold out event, hosted by M. Shanken Communications chairman Marvin R. Shanken. This latest edition of the Seminar featured presentations from top executives across wine, spirits, distribution, retail, fine dining, and the emerging cannabis industry.
Opening the festivities, Shanken paid tribute to the 416 speakers who’ve addressed the Seminar over its 45 years, observing that in many ways they represent the history of the industry itself. In particular, he highlighted the many multi-generational families who’ve participated in the Seminar as both speakers and attendees, underscoring the familial nature of the business and the event. “It’s a family, it’s a tradition, and hopefully it will go on for many years,” he said.
Seminar attendees then heard from a variety of leaders from across the industry. They included: Ivan Menezes, CEO of Diageo plc, on “A New Strategy After Covid?”; Ann Mukherjee, chairman and CEO of Pernod Ricard North America, on “Purpose Driven Spirits Marketing;” Wayne Chaplin, CEO of Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, on “The Many Benefits of Charity Marketing;” Troy Rice, COO of Total Wine & More, on “The Future of Retailing as I See It;” José Andrés, founder of ThinkFoodGroup, on “Post Pandemic—The Future of the Restaurant Industry;” David Klein, CEO of Canopy Growth Corp., on “Cannabis Drinks’ Extraordinary Potential;” and Alex Ryan, CEO of Duckhorn Wine Company, on “Becoming a Publicly Traded Wine Company.”
After the morning program, Seminar attendees gathered for a Champagne reception followed by a luncheon in The Pierre’s Wedgewood Room, formerly the hotel’s private nightclub. After the meal, special luncheon speaker Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida and a rising star in Republican politics, took the podium to weigh in on a variety of hot-button topics including his response to the pandemic, the state of the economy, and what measures he’s taking in Florida to improve the business climate, education, and pressing foreign policy concerns, before taking questions from the audience.
The 46th Annual Impact Marketing Seminar will be held next year, with the date to be announced in due course.Subscribe to Shanken News Daily’s Email Newsletter, delivered to your inbox each morning.
