RNDC Partners With Opici To Enter New York Market

November 19, 2021

In case you missed yesterday’s news alert, Republic National Distributing Co. (RNDC) is set to enter the New York market via a partnership with existing wholesaler Opici Family Distributing. The two companies signed a letter of intent to create an equal partnership in New York, expected to launch in the first quarter of 2022.

RNDC ranks as the second-largest wholesaler in the U.S. overall, with projected 2021 revenues of $12.5 billion. Also this year, the company announced its expansion into Illinois, as well as into five new control states. With New York, it will have a footprint of 38 states plus Washington D.C.

For Opici, the deal marks ongoing collaboration with RNDC, which acquired its former Florida distribution business in January, and handles its import portfolio in multiple markets around the country. Besides New York, Opici has distribution operations in five other East Coast markets: New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Delaware. President Linda Opici said the alliance with RNDC in New York will “mutually enhance our future growth and success. Our collaboration will capitalize on Opici’s established foundation in the New York market while creating exciting new opportunities for our customers and suppliers.” Opici’s New York supplier portfolio includes brands from Bronco Wine Co., Don Sebastiani & Sons, Pacific Highway, Precept, Purple Wines & Spirits, Vintage Point, Wente, and WX Brands, among others.

According to Impact Databank, New York is the fourth-largest market nationwide for both spirits and wine, with spirits volume at 14.6 million cases in 2020 and wine at 26.8 million cases. The state’s wholesale tier is dominated by Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits and Empire Merchants, which have projected New York revenues of $2.1 billion and $1.8 billion, respectively, for 2021, according to Shanken’s Impact Newsletter.
