•With the passing of Alexander “Sandy” Block due to cancer on Nov. 21 at the age of 72, the wine and hospitality world has lost an undersung hero. Block was vice president of beverage operations for Legal Sea Foods, the Boston-based restaurant group he joined in 2004. In 1992 he had become a Master of Wine—the first to hold that coveted title on the East Coast—and though not well-known outside of the wine world, within it he was seen as a person of great knowledge, influence, and generosity. Wine Spectator has more on Block’s life and career.
•Crown Royal is releasing a new 18-year-old expression. A blend of three different whiskies, the new entry is bottled at 40% abv. The brand is supporting the new whisky’s launch with a partnership with Atlanta, Georgia-based grillz maker Scotty ATL, who has created four sets of the tooth bling prosthetics inspired by Crown 18-Year-Old. These grillz were made with diamonds, opals, and engraved arrows in a series of nods to the bottle design of the expression. Crown Royal Aged 18 Years is available nationwide in limited quantities for $140 a 750-ml.
•Mossburn Distillers has announced the second release from Scotland’s Torabhaig Distillery, Allt Gleann The Legacy Series. The 46% abv single malt follows Legacy Series 2017, released in February, and is distilled and matured at the company’s Isle of Skye distillery, the first new Scotch producer on the island in nearly 200 years. Allt Gleann is selected from 30 casks and will see four batches released through the end of 2022. It is also the second of four planned releases leading up to the distillery’s flagship 10-year-old whisky, slated to debut in 2028. Allt Gleann is rolling out to retailers across the U.S. now and retails for around $62 a 750-ml.
•The Macklowe, a new, luxury-priced American single malt whiskey, has released Cask #61, the first offering from the brand drawn from founder Julie Macklowe’s private selection. The 46% abv whiskey was distilled in 2014 and was selected for release by whisky consultant and distiller Ian MacMillan. Only 237 bottles will be available, selling in luxury retailers like Sotheby’s, Park Avenue Liquors, and Sherry-Lehmann, among others. This is the first release in Macklowe’s Casks of Distinction series.

Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund was established by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear to assist those impacted by the tornados and the severe weather system on December 11. Gopuff is also preparing to donate essential needs to state & local relief centers as response efforts continue.Subscribe to Shanken News Daily’s Email Newsletter, delivered to your inbox each morning.
