U.S. Cognac Shipments Up 11%, With XO And Above Soaring 59%

Worldwide Cognac shipments grew 16.2% to 223.2 million bottles (18.6 million cases) in 2021, according to the Bureau National Interprofessionel du Cognac, constituting a turnover of €3.6 billion ($4b).

In the U.S., Cognac shipments were up 11.1% to 115 million bottles (9.6 million cases) in 2021, breaking down to 74.3 million bottles (6.2 million cases) of VS, up 3.8%; 38.2 million bottles (3.2 million cases) of VSOP, up 26%; and 2.5 million bottles (208,000 cases) of XO and other aged categories, up 59.2%.

China made up Cognac’s second-largest destination last year at 34 million bottles (2.8 million cases) on 55.8% growth. Europe collectively accounted for an additional 37.1 million bottles (3.1 million cases), up 8.1%. In addition to the gains in volume, the category was up 30.9% by value worldwide.—Danny Sullivan
