Vega Sicilia Investing €20 Million In New Rias Baixas Winery

February 8, 2022

Spain’s Vega Sicilia has announced plans for a new winery located in Rías Baixas on a €20 million ($23m) investment, designed to produce white wines from the Albariño grape. The site will be making two wines: Deiva, with two years of aging, and Arnela, earmarked to become the group’s premium white with three years’ aging. Deiva’s first harvest is scheduled for 2023, reaching the market in 2025. The goal is to reach a total production of 300,000 bottles (25,000 cases) between the two wines.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Alvarez family’s acquisition of Vega Sicilia. At the time of the acquisition back in 1982, Vega Sicilia sold approximately 200,000 bottles and exported to five countries. Today, production capacity totals 1.5 million bottles (125,000 cases) sold across 150 countries, with 2021 sales at €60 million ($69m).
