Cannabis Beverages Gaining Share In The U.S.

February 22, 2022

Market research firm Headset has released a new report looking at cannabis sales by category.

Nearly every category saw higher sales in 2021 than in 2020. Flower continued to lead the way, as its overall value rose 12% last year to $5.5 billion in sales across Headset’s sample states of California, Colorado, Washington, Nevada, and Oregon. Vape pens gained 28% to reach $2.6 billion, edibles gained 20% to hit $1.4 billion, and beverages gained 45% to reach $145 million in sales.

Looking at the figures by market share tells an interesting story. Despite its dominant position, flower lost 6% of its share. Vape pens and capsule products both gained 8%, while pre-rolls gained 17%, indicating less that customers are moving away from smoking cannabis than that they are looking for convenience.

The big winner however was cannabis beverages, which saw market share grow 23% in the U.S. last year. The category’s rise has been gradual but steady–from just about 2% of the market in January 2020, it nearly doubled to 3.75% by December of last year.—Danny Sullivan
