•Scottish online auctioneer Whisky Hammer has set a new world record with the sale of a 1988 Macallan cask, which brought a hammer price of $1.18 million. The cask, currently stored at Macallan Distillery, is expected to yield 534 bottles at 51.5% alcohol by volume. The price was substantially higher than the $462,000 paid for a 1991 Macallan cask last August at Bonhams, Hong Kong. However, the difference isn’t quite as large as it first appears, as the lower yield of 202 bottles from the Bonhams cask makes their price per bottle roughly equal, at $2,200 a bottle.
•Napa Valley, California-based importer and marketer Demeine Estates has added Domaine Roc de l’Abbaye of Sancerre to its portfolio. The move will give Demeine importation rights for Roc de l’Abbaye Sancerre Blanc, the L’Antique range, and the Tradition Cuvées which include Sancerre Blanc, Sancerre Rosé, Sancerre Rouge and Pouilly-Fumé. In addition, Demeine will handle the IGP designated wine Loire Sauvignon Blanc. With the exception of the IGP, all of Domaine Roc de l’Abbaye of Sancerre’s grapes come from vineyards in the Saint-Satur region, which is notable for its rare Silex-heavy soil.
