Millennials, Gen Z Driving Enthusiasm For Tequila, Spirits-Based RTDs
May 20, 2022Tequila and spirits-based RTDs are likely to continue driving spirits growth over the course of this year, according to Drizly’s fourth annual consumer trends report, which draws from a sample of just over 1,000 Drizly users. The e-commerce player’s survey shows a sharp rise in interest for both booming categories. In addition to the good news for RTD- and Tequila-makers, the survey showed a growing interest in red wine among Generation Z users (with 38% saying they will buy more looking ahead), as well as rising interest among millennials and Gen Z drinkers in finding non-alcoholic alternatives.
Drizly, which was acquired by Uber last year for $1.1 billion, reports that 17% of respondents indicated that they will buy more Tequila this year than last; for comparison, that’s seven percentage points higher than American whiskies, and second only to vodka, for which 18% said they would buy more (although vodka’s overall share on the platform has slipped over the last three years).
Within RTDs, Tequila is again the biggest attraction, with 43% of respondents looking for new Tequila-based cocktails, well ahead of the second-largest category of interest, hard iced teas. The survey also showed that 70% of Gen Z users and 56% of millennials choose Tequila as their spirit of choice in spirits-based RTDs.—Shane English
