Cask Of Islay Single Malt Ardbeg From 1975 Sells For $19 Million

July 12, 2022

Moët Hennessy-owned Ardbeg has announced the sale of its oldest cask of a whisky, a barrel filled in 1975. The single malt sold to a private collector in Asia for £16 million (roughly $19m) and will be bottled for the buyer over the next five years, allowing most of the whisky to continue to age to ultimately create a tasting flight of some of the rarest whiskies in the distillery.

The barrel, “Cask No. 3,” is one of very few remaining from before the Ardbeg distillery was temporarily shuttered in the 1980s and 1990s. To celebrate the sale, Ardbeg will donate £1 million ($1.19m) to various causes on Islay.—Shane English
