The 46th Annual Impact Marketing Seminar: Industry’s Leading Executives Gather In New York

M. Shanken Communications, Inc., New York, held the 46th Annual Impact Marketing Seminar yesterday, bringing together top executives from across the beverage alcohol business. The drinks industry’s leading lights convened at The Pierre in New York City for a packed program at the sold-out event, hosted by M. Shanken Communications chairman Marvin R. Shanken. The latest edition of the Seminar featured presentations from top executives across the wine, spirits, distribution, retail, e-commerce, and fine dining segments.

Shanken opened the event by saluting the many illustrious speakers from all parts of the drinks business who have helped make the Seminar the industry’s signature summit, including Harvey and Wayne Chaplin, Robert Mondavi, Joe Gallo, Ray Herrmann, Jess Jackson, Corinne Mentzelopoulos, Ivan Menezes, Patrick and Alexandre Ricard, and Michel Roux, to name only a few. He also paid tribute to the family feel of the event, noting that one of this year’s speakers, Danny Wirtz, became the third generation of his family to address the Seminar.

The audience then heard from six thought leaders from various corners of the industry. They included Ken Austin, co-founder, Teremana Tequila, discussing the topic, “State of Play: The Booming Tequila Market”; Campbell P. Brown, chair of the board, Brown-Forman Corp., on “The American Whiskey Renaissance”; Jim Clerkin, CEO, Demeter & Co., on “Retired But Still Working—A Look Back and Forward”; Yakir Gola, co-founder and CEO, Gopuff, on “The On-Demand Delivery Revolution for Beverage Alcohol”; Helen Mackey, senior vice president of marketing, Darden, on “The Future of Restaurants—Post Pandemic”; and Danny Wirtz, vice chairman, Breakthru Beverage, on “Digital Transformation at the Wholesale Tier.”

Following the presentations there was a panel discussion on the “State of the Industry: Post-Pandemic,” featuring Nick Mehall, president and CEO of Republic National Distributing Co. (RNDC); Jason Milburn, director of adult beverages, The Kroger Co.; Stephen Rust, president, reserve and new business, Diageo; William Terlato, CEO, Terlato Wine Group; and Jonathan Yusen, chief officer, network distribution companies, William Grant & Sons, who was recently named president and CEO of New Jersey distributor Allied Beverage, effective in November.

After the morning program, Seminar attendees gathered for a Champagne reception followed by a luncheon in The Pierre’s Cotillion Room. Following the meal, Fox News anchor Brett Baier was introduced as the special luncheon speaker, taking the podium to discuss a diverse range of issues such as the war in Ukraine, inflation, immigration, and the upcoming midterm elections, before taking questions from Shanken and the audience.

The 47th Annual Impact Marketing Seminar will be held next year, with the date to be announced in due course.—Daniel Marsteller
