Sotheby’s Wine and Spirits Auction Sales Set New Company Record
December 21, 2022Sotheby’s worldwide auction sales of wine and spirits reached $150 million in 2022, up 14% from the previous year’s $132 million and setting a new record for the New York-based auction house.
Wine sales comprised the lion’s share of that total at $121 million, with spirits accounting for $29 million. But the spirits side continued to show rapid growth, with U.S. sales more than doubling to $12 million last year, from the 2021 total of $5 million.
Notable distillery partners and their auction prices for Sotheby’s included The Macallan (The Macallan The Reach 81 Years Old, $325,740); The Dalmore (The Dalmore 48 Year Old Luminary No. 1 Rare, $137,900); Diageo (Port Ellen and Brora Casks From a Bygone Era, $1,061,900 each); and The Glenturret (Bottle #1 First Ever 50 Year Old Whisky From Glenturret Distillery, $61,680).
Asia led all global regions for Sotheby’s with sales of $54 million, while the U.S. accounted for $32 million and the U.K. $22 million. France posted sales of $42 million, with the 162nd Hospices de Beaune auction on November 20 accounting for $32 million of the French business. Sotheby’s held a total of 69 wine and spirits auctions this year.
