Illinois Clears $1.5 Billion In Yearly Recreational Sales

January 10, 2023

Recreational cannabis sales surpassed $1.5 billion in Illinois last year, according to the latest data from the state’s Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. For most of 2022 sales hovered around $130 million per month, up somewhat from 2021’s standard of approximately $120 million a month. But for three years running, December saw the strongest demand of any month and sales reached $143.9 million, setting a new record. That performance was driven by purchases from in-state residents, which surpassed $100 million on their own for the first time, as well as $41.4 million in spending from non-residents. 3.4 million cannabis items were sold in December, also a record.

For the year, the numbers break down similarly. Of the $1.5 billion in total sales, just over $1 billion was spent by state residents and $479.2 million came from visitors. Products sold numbered 36.4 million for the 12-month period. In dollar terms, it was a 12% increase from 2021’s total and a 20% increase in the number of items purchased, a hint that dollar growth could have been even stronger if cannabis prices were not falling over the course of the year. There are 113 cannabis retail locations in Illinois, as of the beginning of 2023.

“When I signed the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act into law in 2019, we set out on an ambitious goal: to create the most equitable and economically prosperous cannabis industry in the nation,” said governor J.B. Pritzker. “Our data from 2022 shows that we are well on our way towards making that idea a reality.”—Danny Sullivan
