Polling Finds Strong Support For Federal Legalization Across Party Lines
January 24, 2023Voters in the U.S. strongly support federal legalization of recreational cannabis and in addition generally support policy measures promoting equity and diversity in the industry, according to polling from Data For Progress. The pollster conducted a survey of 1,228 likely voters last month.
Among respondents, 40% “strongly support” federal legalization and an additional 25% “somewhat support” the idea. With 5% responding “don’t know,” 19% said they were strongly opposed and 11% were somewhat opposed, giving total support a 35% lead over total opposition. Among voters aligned with the Democratic party support was higher—75% were in favor and only 20% were opposed. But even among Republican voters a majority was in favor, with 29% strongly in favor and 23% somewhat in favor for 52% overall.
On the equity questions, Data For Progress asked respondents if they would support the two measures enacted in New York State that reserved licenses for individuals affected by cannabis prosecution and that divert 40% of cannabis tax revenue into a community grant fund. On the licensing question, 57% of all respondents supported, split between strong and weak support while 34% were opposed. On the community grant fund, 65% were in favor and only 28% were opposed.—Danny Sullivan
