Scotch Whisky Exports Up Big In 2022

February 13, 2023

Global exports of Scotch whisky jumped 37% by value to £6.2 billion ($7.5b) last year on a volume increase of 21% to the equivalent of 1.67 billion 700-ml. bottles. The United States continued its recovery following the removal of tariffs on single malts to again be the Scotch industry’s only market with exports valued over £1 billion. Scotch shipments to the U.S. rose 33% to £1.05 billion ($1.27b) in 2022, as volume increased 9% to 137 million 700-ml. bottles.

Globally, the higher-priced single malt segment was up 30% to £1.99 billion ($2.4b), accounting for just under one-third of total export value. “In 2022, the industry benefited from the full reopening of hospitality businesses in key global markets, as well as the return of global travel retail, which opens such an important window for Scotch whisky to business and leisure travelers,” said Mark Kent, CEO of the Scotch Whisky Association. “Exports were also boosted by the continued premiumization trend.”
