Prosecco A Bright Spot In U.S. Sparkling Wine Market

May 22, 2023

After 13 consecutive annual gains, the U.S. market for sparkling wine slipped 1.5% by volume in 2022, according to Impact Databank. The sector eked out a slight gain by dollar value, but prior to last year, the last time sparkling wines decreased as a category was during the global financial crisis.

American sparkling wines stumbled 5% by volume in 2022. Champagne and Cava also declined, but Prosecco remained a bright spot. Last year, the U.S. surpassed the U.K. to become the world’s largest market for Prosecco, at 11.4 million 9-liter cases, up 6.3%—also ahead of the domestic market of Italy.

Gallo’s La Marca reached the three-million-case threshold in 2022 (up 10.5%) and remains the U.S. market’s largest-selling sparkling wine by volume. No other Prosecco has reached a million cases yet in the U.S., but second-ranked Mionetto is now within 40,000 cases of that milestone, and earlier this year introduced a packaging refresh and other promotions in tandem with its 25th anniversary in the U.S.

The fastest-growing Prosecco in 2022 among the major brands was Constellation’s Ruffino (+11.1%). Last year, Constellation also broadened its Prosecco portfolio further with the launch of Kim Crawford Sparkling Prosecco. Among smaller labels, notable growth was also achieved in 2022 by 90+ Cellars Lot 50 Prosecco, Ethica Wines’ La Gioiosa, Trinchero’s Avissi, and Prestige Wine’s Val d’Oca.

Momentum continues into 2023 as Prosecco volumes gained 6% in IRI channels for the year-to-date period ending April 23, while retail dollars rose 10%. By comparison, American sparkling wines fell 5% by volume and 2% in dollar terms, year-to-date.
