Bordeaux Winebank Launches Online Exchange
January 18, 2012Bordeaux Winebank, a Luxembourg-based wine trader, has launched an online sales platform, Bordeaux Winebank Exchange (BWE), to service importers, distributors, retailers and restaurants. The company, which also has locations in Norway, France, Singapore and Hong Kong, has around $100 million worth of wine under management, and is selling recent vintages of top châteaux including Haut-Brion, Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild and others on BWE.
BWE claims to be unmatched in preventing the spread of counterfeit wines, certifying the paper trail of all wines sold on the site through its “Five Star Provenance” guarantee. Its stipulations state that all wines must be sold in their original wooden cases, all wines must have documented “ex château” provenance, and all cases must remain in professional, temperature-controlled and monitored storage in Bordeaux since bottling. Michael Egan, a 24-year veteran of Sotheby’s wine department (which has partnered with Bordeaux Winebank on auctions in New York, Hong Kong and London over the past year), serves as the company’s director of authenticity and auctions.
