F. Korbel & Bros. Unloads Valley Of The Moon, Lake Sonoma To West Coast Wine Partners
August 22, 2012After a deal to sell its Kenwood Vineyards brand to Banfi collapsed last month, F. Korbel & Bros. has sold two smaller brands—Valley of the Moon and Lake Sonoma—to West Coast Wine Partners for an undisclosed sum. The deal includes the brands (which combine for around 45,000 cases annually) as well as inventory, production facilities and 40 acres of estate vineyards.
Valley of the Moon, the larger of the two brands, focuses on Sonoma varietals including Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay that sell from around $10-$20 a bottle. Lake Sonoma includes Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon wines from Dry Creek, the Alexander Valley and the Russian River Valley that range from around $15 to $25.
West Coast Wine Partners is led by former Beringer executive Dan Zepponi and Tony Stewart, whose family owns Canada’s Quails’ Gate Winery. Founded in 2010, the company recently released a new Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon label, Plume, which is selling in Canada and on a limited basis in the U.S. at around $30 a bottle.
With Valley of the Moon and Lake Sonoma departing, the F. Korbel & Bros. portfolio will continue to be focused around the Korbel sparkling wine brand, which sells around 1.3 million cases annually, and Kenwood, which has volume of over 500,000 cases.
