Brown-Forman’s Sales Rise 10% In First Quarter, As Southern Comfort Returns To Growth
August 29, 2012Continuing strong growth for Jack Daniel’s both inside and outside the U.S., as well as an improvement in Southern Comfort’s performance, helped Brown-Forman to a 10% organic net sales increase to $878.1 million in the three months through July, its fiscal first quarter. The Jack Daniel’s trademark grew 15% during the quarter, as its Tennessee Honey variant expanded into more international markets (the brand also got a boost from buy-ins by distributors ahead of scheduled price increases).
Encouragingly for a brand that’s been under pressure in recent years, Southern Comfort returned to net sales growth in the U.S. over the last three months, reflecting “a stronger and more consistent media presence, more effective promotional efforts with the trade and continued flavor innovation,” in the company’s words. Brown Forman’s Herradura Tequila brand, as well as its super-premium Sonoma-Cutrer wines and its high-end whisk(e)y brands—including Gentleman Jack, Woodford Reserve, Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel and Collingwood—also contributed solid growth during the period.
