September 13, 2012•Central California’s Firestone Walker Brewing Co. has begun production at its recently completed, 60 barrel brewhouse. Located in Paso Robles, the new facility is housed in a three-story tower, which requires a smaller footprint and allows Firestone Walker to use gravity to move ingredients. In addition to the brewhouse, the project also includes a new visitor center, tasting bar and retail shop. Established in 1996, Firestone Walker is known for its flagship pale ales, which includes the DBA (Double Barrel Ale), Pale 31 and Union Jack labels, as well as a variety of seasonal, reserve and specialty offerings.
•Scottish craft brewer Innis & Gunn is set to release a small-batch spiced rum aged beer into the U.S. market. Rolling out this month, Innis & Gunn Spiced Rum Aged is created using a proprietary device called the “Oakerator.” The process involves infusing air-dried, toasted American Oak with a blend of Caribbean spiced rum, which is then combined with beer in the Oakerator. According to Innis & Gunn CEO Dougal Sharp, this alternative aging technique “imparts the typical flavors of barrel maturation,” but also allows for increased creativity. Priced at around $12.99 a four-pack, the beer will be available throughout the East Coast, as well as in Tennessee, Alabama, Illinois, Michigan and Nevada. Innis & Gunn Spiced Rum Aged is the brewer’s third limited edition beer to launch in the U.S., following the debut of both Innis & Gunn Irish Whiskey Cask and Innis & Gunn Independence Day earlier this year.
