Veneto’s Bertani Family Forms New Company, Gaetano Bertani e Figli
October 16, 2012Verona, Italy’s Bertani family has announced a new wine venture, Agricola Gaetano Bertani e Figli, following the sale of its former company, Cantine Bertani, to Tenimenti Angelini late last year. The new entity retains 73 acres of vineyards in the Valpolicella Classico area and the 54-acre Tenuta Santa Maria alla Pieve estate in Val d’Illasi, as well as winemaking facilities in both locations. Those holdings will allow the company to source 100% of its fruit from its own vineyards.
Known for its Valpolicella and Amarone wines, the Bertani family intends to train its focus on “top echelon wines” with the new venture. It will begin by expanding its Tenuta Santa Maria range with four new wines this fall, including a Lepia Soave ($22), a Pragal Rosso Veneto ($22), a Valpolicella Ripasso ($32) and an Amarone della Valpolicella ($90). The Tenuta Santa Maria line currently features a Torre Pieve Chardonnay ($32) and a Decima Aurea Merlot ($48). Gaetano Bertani e Figli, whose wines are handled in the U.S. by Sausalito-based Grapes On The Go, tells Shanken News Daily it’s also planning one entirely new brand for 2013.
