October 17, 2012•Delaware-based Dogfish Head is collaborating with rock band Grateful Dead to release a limited edition brew, American Beauty. The pale ale is brewed with all American hops and barley as well as a special ingredient that will be voted on by fans (suggestions will be taken online in December). The brewery will produce some 1,200-2,000 barrels of American Beauty. It’s expected to roll out across Dogfish Head’s 27-state distribution network in October 2013. Last year, the company collaborated with Pearl Jam to release Faithfull Ale in time for the band’s 20th anniversary, as well as two additional collaborations with Sony Legacy, including the Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew and the Robert Johnson tribute Hellhound On My Ale.
•Perth-based West Australian Distilling Co. has released its South Sea rum to select U.S. markets. South Sea rum is priced at $29.99-$34.99 a 750-ml. and is currently available in New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Connecticut, with plans to expand distribution into additional markets. The 40%-abv rum is crafted with free-run juice from Queensland sugar cane, mixed with Australian tropical rainwater and finished in old and new American oak for at least two years. The company will also roll out its Opal Blue gin to the same four core markets in November.
•Scottish craft brewer Innis & Gunn is launching a limited edition Porter-style seasonal in the U.S. Priced at $10.99 a four-pack, Innis & Gunn Winter Beer 2012 is based on a 19th century recipe, featuring a flavor profile of oak, molasses, fruit and chocolate, layered with Innis & Gunn’s signature vanilla notes. In addition to the four-pack format, the seasonal brew will also be available in the brewer’s Holiday Winter Pack, alongside its core Original Flagship and Rum Cask labels. Winter Beer 2012 is Innis & Gunn’s fourth limited edition offering in the U.S., following the rollout of the company’s Irish Whiskey Cask, Independence Day and Spiced Rum Aged expressions earlier this year.
