May 22, 2013•Vermont’s Magic Hat Brewery has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Lexington, Kentucky-based upstart West Sixth Brewing Co., according to local news reports. Filed with the U.S. District Court on May 16, the suit claims that West Sixth’s logo and packaging closely resemble the logo on Magic Hat’s flagship #9 label. Following the charge, West Sixth—which was founded in April 2012—released a social media statement calling the lawsuit “frivolous” and accusing Magic Hat of “corporate bullying.” Magic Hat is part of Cerveceria Costa Rica’s North American Breweries, which also includes the Labatt, Genesee, Pyramid and Honey Brown Lager brands.
•Long Beach, California-based Beachwood Brewing is set to release a new smoked double stout, Still Life, next month. Brewed with golden naked oats and malt that’s smoked in-house, Still Life will launch June 7 in 22-ounce bottles at retail stores throughout Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties, as well as on draft at both Beachwood BBQ restaurant locations.
