ABI Closes $20.1 Billion Modelo Deal
June 5, 2013Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI) has finalized its $20.1 billion takeover of Mexico’s Grupo Modelo. According to a recent statement from both companies, the deal is expected to significantly expand the global footprint for many of Grupo Modelo’s brands—including Corona—as well as introduce ABI’s offerings into Modelo’s distribution network. Combined, ABI and Grupo Modelo will produce around 400 million hectoliters (340.9m barrels) of beer annually, and are projected to generate roughly $1 billion in cost synergies.
In related news, ABI is also set to finalize its sale of Modelo-owned Piedras Negras brewery, 50% of the Mexican brewer’s stake in Crown Imports and perpetual rights to the Modelo portfolio in the U.S. to Constellation Brands. That deal, valued at approximately $4.8 billion, is slated to close by Friday.
