Craft Brewing and Distilling News for August 7, 2013

•Oregon’s House Spirits Distillery is unveiling a new retail outlet at Portland International Airport this month. In addition to stocking House Spirits’ core portfolio, the outlet will also offer limited edition small-batch offerings, as well as host a variety of tastings and events throughout the year. Additional merchandise, such as branded apparel, cocktail ware and local products, will also be available. The Portland International Airport outlet is House Spirits’ second retail site, joining the distiller’s Portland-based retail tasting room. Founded in 2004, House Spirits—which produces the Aviation American Gin, Westward Oregon Straight Malt Whiskey and Krogstad Aquavit brands, among others—reported a sales rise of 84% last year.

New Belgium Brewing has introduced its newest seasonal beer, Pumpkick Ale, in time for the fall. The 6%-abv brew will be available in 12-ounce bottles and on draft. Pumpkick is brewed with pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice, with cranberries added in. The brew joins Rolle Bolle in New Belgium’s 2013 lineup of seasonals, and replaces Red Hoptober as the company’s fall seasonal. New Belgium entered the Florida market in July and will move into Delaware later this month, increasing its distribution footprint to 33 states and Washington, D.C.

•Providence, Rhode Island-based Narragansett Beer has re-released a retro Narragansett Lager can, using a design and logo once featured in the classic film “Jaws.” The can—whose launch coincides with Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week” event and the birthday of “Jaws” actor Robert Shaw—will be available throughout New England for a limited time, in 12-, 18- and 30-packs (priced at around $10-$12, $13-$15 and $19-$21, respectively). The rollout follows Narragansett’s recent re-release of a 1950s 12-ounce can design in June, as well as a reintroduction of its signature Clam Can—a 16-ounce tallboy that features a New England clam bake recipe—earlier this summer.
