Craft Brewing and Distilling News for August 13, 2013
August 13, 2013•Former Goose Island brewmaster Jared Rouben is launching a new “culinary-focused” brewery in Chicago this winter. Located at The Glass Factory on S. Peoria Street in the Pilsen East neighborhood, the Moody Tongue Brewing Co. will offer a number of seasonal beers created in a “culinary brewing” style—a new method that “incorporates cooking methods and ingredients that enhance the flavor profiles and aromatics of beer,” according to the company. The beers will share the flavors and aromatic components of wine and cider balanced with hops and malts as found in traditional beer styles. Rouben recently did a similar brewing project at Goose Island, creating a beer called Marisol in collaboration with chef Rick Bayless, featuring green tea, grapefruit and lime peel within a Belgian golden ale.
•Fairfield, New Jersey-based Jersey Artisan Distillery is set to launch its first spirits offerings, beginning with Busted Barrel silver rum. The new product is rolling out in bars and retail stores this week, priced at $24.99 a 750-ml. Busted Barrel silver rum is made with domestically grown ingredients, including molasses sourced from Louisiana. The company has also announced that they will release Busted Barrel dark rum, which has been aged in American white oak barrels, this October. Jersey Artisan Distillery also plans to eventually release an ultra-premium vodka and gin, as well as Bourbon and whiskey offerings using New Jersey sweet corn to be released in 2015. Jersey Artisan Distillery is the state’s first licensed distillery since Prohibition.
•New Belgium Brewing has revealed a new timetable for the launch of its $100 million Asheville, North Carolina brewery. The company told the Asheville Citizen-Times that the new facility will begin construction next spring and start pumping out beer by the end of 2015. Originally, New Belgium had planned to start building the new brewery this year, but announced in May that it would delay the project because upgrades at its existing Colorado facility are expected to allow it to meet its annual sales projections of around 920,000 barrels through 2015. When complete, the Asheville brewery will have a capacity of 500,000 barrels.
•Correction: In yesterday’s SND, it was incorrectly reported that Cusumano and Casa Silva wines are part of the Vin Divino portfolio. In fact, Cusumano has recently moved to Terlato Wines, while Casa Silva is now imported by Vine Connections.
