August 21, 2013•San Jose, California-based J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines has appointed second-generation family member Steve Lohr to CEO and chairman of the board of J. Lohr Winery. Veteran winemaker Jeff Meier, who’s been with J. Lohr for 29 years, was named president and will continue as COO of J. Lohr Winery. Steve Lohr, who previously held the position of executive vice president and COO of J. Lohr Vineyards, will assume overall management, including sales and finance of J. Lohr’s portfolio of vineyard-driven wines and J. Lohr’s two wine centers in Paso Robles and San Jose. Jeff Meier will manage the winemaking facilities in San Jose, Paso Robles and the nearly completed winery in Greenfield, Monterey County, and continue leadership of winemaking and marketing.
•Diageo has reached an agreement to sell its so-called Harp Brewery in Dundalk, Ireland to the Irish Whiskey Company (IWC). IWC, majority-owned by the Teeling family, is expected to take control of the Great Northern Brewery site, where Diageo produced its Harp brand, in early 2014, with plans to convert the plant into an Irish whiskey distillery that will begin operations in late 2017. Diageo had planned to close the Harp Brewery this year, consolidating Irish beer production at its St. James’s Gate facility.
