August 22, 2013•Wirtz Beverage Illinois has added Buckledown Brewing to its stable of craft beer brands for distribution in the Chicago market. The company will launch four beers to the market—Fiddlesticks, Belt & Suspenders, Mirth and Shady Aftermath—beginning November 1, with a focus on the on-premise. The partnership marks the first time that Wirtz has added a craft brewer based in the local Chicago area, and the first time that Buckledown’s beers will be available outside of the brewery. Founded by Sean Mahoney and head brewer Ike Orcutt in January, Buckledown is the fifth craft beer brand to be added to the Wirtz Beverage Illinois stable.
•Flix Brewhouse is set to open a new location at the Merchants’ Square shopping center in Indianapolis. The company has signed a lease with Ramco-Gershenson Properties Trust for a 37,000-square-foot Flix Brewhouse, a cinema brewery that will show movies on state-of-the-art screens. Movie-goers can order fresh food from their seats and choose from a craft list that includes in-house beers as well as popular local labels. Construction of the new facility is slated to begin by year-end, with an official opening slated for fall 2014. Flix Brewhouse currently operates 12 cinema brewhouse locations across California, Nevada, Texas and Washington.
•New York’s Shmaltz Brewing Co. is set to release a pair of limited edition collaborative offerings this fall. Launching this month, St. Lenny’s is a Belgian-style double rye IPA created in partnership with Missouri’s Cathedral Square Brewing. The second offering—Reunion Ale ’13-A Beer For Hope—marks Shmaltz’s third tie-up with Georgia’s Terrapin Beer Co. and SBS Imports founder Alan Shapiro. Also available this month, Reunion Ale ’13 is brewed annually, with a portion of its proceeds going to the Institute for Myeloma and Bone Cancer Research. Both collaborative brews will be available through September. Schmaltz Brewing, which has a distribution footprint of more than 30 states, produces both the He’brew and Coney Island Craft Lager brands.
•Colorado’s Avery Brewing Co. is bringing back its DuganA IPA. The brew has already been released at the taproom in Boulder and will be rolling out in stores and on draft this week. DuganA IPA (8.5% abv) has been released once a year since 2009, designed to showcase the Chinook hops. Avery also produces Avery IPA, The Maharaja Imperial IPA, White Rascal Belgian Wheat Ale and Mephistopheles’ Stout, as well as 18 other year-round and seasonal beers.
