Craft Brewing and Distilling News for October 2, 2013
October 2, 2013•Hawaii’s Kona Brewing, part of the Craft Brew Alliance, has appointed San Francisco-based Duncan/Channon as its ad agency of record and is planning a new campaign, expected to launch in the second quarter of next year. Kona senior director of marketing Robert Rentsch said the new push would be the “largest media investment to date” behind Kona, whose shipments rose 27% to 220,000 barrels in 2012. Meanwhile, Craft Brew Alliance’s Square Mile Cider Co. is significantly expanding distribution this fall. The company is extending its existing footprint in Oregon, Washington and California, as well as adding Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada and Texas. Square Mile has also debuted new packaging—including a six-pack of 12-ounce bottles and 1/2-barrel draft, which join the existing 22-ounce bottles and 1/6-barrel draft.
•North Carolina’s Mims Distributing has partnered with Carolina Brewing Co. to create Carolina Wet Hop IPA. The beer is a single batch brewed with more than 22 pounds of Cascade hops sourced from Mims’ own hops field, and marks the first beer to be produced using the distributor’s hops. The batch was also brewed with four pounds of Willamette hops from Dragonfly Farm in Franklin County, followed by Pale, Carapils and Caramel malts and extra nugget hops added by Carolina Brewing. Mims distributes in a nine-county area in and around the Triangle region of North Carolina. Holly Springs-based Carolina Brewing has produced more than a dozen year-round, seasonal and specialty beers since 1994.
