News Briefs for December 17, 2013
December 17, 2013•Monarch Beverage, Indiana’s top beer wholesaler, has filed suit against the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission in an effort to win the right to distribute spirits, according to local reports. Monarch does handle some wine brands, but current Indiana law forbids distributors from handling both beer and spirits. Monarch is arguing that the law violates the Equal Protection Clause in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Indiana’s largest spirits and wine wholesaler is Republic National Distributing Co. of Indiana, with projected revenues of $360 million for this year, according to Impact Newsletter. Southern Wine & Spirits of Indiana is in second place with 2013 projected revenues of $225 million, followed by Glazer’s Companies of Indiana at $125 million.
•Novato, California-based contract producer Winery Exchange has named 20-year strategic marketing veteran Oren Lewin as senior vice president, marketing, responsible for all marketing and creative services across the company’s wine, beer and spirits portfolio. Lewin was previously executive vice president for Blends Inc., where he led sales and marketing for that group’s wine brands from Argentina, Italy and California. Prior to that he was senior vice president, marketing, at Constellation Wines U.S., where he managed more than 60 wine and spirits brands.
