News Briefs for December 24, 2013
December 24, 2013•Ketel One has filed a lawsuit against Arcadia Imports, accusing Arcadia’s Dutchcraft vodka of trademark infringement. According to Diageo NA executive vice president Guy Smith, Arcadia is “deliberately trying to confuse consumers” and has packaged its Dutchcraft brand in a “copycat bottle with imitative labeling” that is reminiscent of Ketel One’s. Established in 2006, Connecticut-based Arcadia has positioned Dutchcraft as a small-batch, super-premium vodka from Holland. Ketel One’s ownership is split 50/50 between Diageo and the Nolet family.
•Total Wine & More will likely have to delay the opening of its first Minnesota store until at least April, according to local news reports. Previously slated to open earlier this month, the chain’s Bloomington, Minnesota location is awaiting approval from Bloomington’s City Council, which has opted to review several court cases in which Total Wine either sued a competitor or challenged state laws. The planned Bloomington store marks Total Wine’s first foray into the Midwest market, and brings its total footprint to more than 100 stores in 16 states. The retailer is also planning a second Minnesota location in Roseville this spring.
