Control State Spirits Sales Slide In November

Distilled spirits volume declined in control states in the month of November, falling by an aggregate 2.8% in the 18 control jurisdictions. Year-to-date, control state spirits sales have mounted an unimpressive increase of 1.2% in 2013. Last year, spirits gained 3.6% in control markets, outpacing the overall industry. According to Impact Databank, control states account for roughly 22% of the total U.S. spirits market.

Spirits sales in the largest control market, Pennsylvania, declined 1.2% year-to-date through November. So far, the best gains in 2013 have been recorded in Utah (+3.6%) and Ohio (+3.1%). Irish whiskey (+12%) is the fastest-growing spirits type year-to-date in control states, while vodka, the largest category, grew a modest 1.4%. The cordials/liqueurs segment grew 5.4% in the 11 months through November, primarily due to the contribution of fast-rising flavored whiskey products.
