Craft Brewing and Distilling News for March 14, 2014

March 14, 2014

•Chicago craft brewer Berghoff has released the first entry in a new specialty series of “uberbiers.” Billed as a classic American strong ale, Berghoff Oak-Aged Stock Ale is made with 2-Row Pils, caramel and black malts and Belgian brewer’s brown sugar, and is aged and fermented with toasted oak. The 10%-abv entry, which rolls out next month, will be available in limited quantities throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana on draft and in four-packs. Berghoff’s new specialty range is designed to highlight the brewer’s ability to blend its traditional German roots with modern craft beer sensibilities. A second expression in the new series is slated to launch in June.

•Albany, New York-based Steadfast Beer Co. has expanded distribution to include Connecticut and New Jersey and is expecting to be in southern Maine by the end of the month. Brescome Barton will distribute Steadfast beers to Connecticut, Black River Traders will handle the brand in New Jersey and Nappi Distributors will be responsible for distribution in Maine. Steadfast has been expanding from its home base in Albany to metro New York and states in the Northeast since its founding in 2011. Its current portfolio of gluten-free craft beers include Sorghum Pale Ale, Golden Blonde Ale and seasonal Pumpkin Spice Ale, with plans to release a new year-round Oatmeal Cream Stout in 4-packs and quarterly 22-ounce “Special Editions” of the beer this year. To mark the brewery’s second anniversary in April, Steadfast will release Biere de Garde in 22-ounce bottles as well.

•Atlanta-based SweetWater Brewing Company is releasing two of its most popular beers in 100%-recyclable 12- and 16-ounce aluminum cans. SweetWater’s 420 Extra Pale Ale and its IPA will be available in cans in nine southeastern states—Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana, Kentucky and Virginia. The brewery partnered with Ball Corporation for the packaging, which contains 60% recycled aluminum.
