Craft Brewing and Distilling News for March 28, 2014
March 28, 2014•Michigan governor Rick Snyder yesterday gave a boost to the state’s craft breweries by signing a nine-bill package aimed at expanding the industry. Legislation included in the package doubles the amount of beer a microbrewer can produce—from 30,000 barrels annually to 60,000—and allows brewpub owners to have an interest in five other pubs, up from two, as long as combined production does not exceed 18,000 barrels as year. Also, microbreweries producing less than 1,000 barrels a year can now distribute their product directly to retailers. Michigan’s brewing industry contributes more than $133 million to the economy and more than $24 million in wages, according to the Michigan Brewers Guild.
•Portland, Maine’s Shipyard Brewing Company has added Shipyard American Pale Ale to its year-round lineup in the U.S. Originally brewed and released on draft in the U.K. in 2013, Shipyard American Pale Ale was created as part of a collaboration between Shipyard and U.K. brewer Marston’s. The 4.5%-abv offering is set to roll out stateside this April, available in both 12-ounce and 22-ounce bottles and on draft, priced at around $8.99 a six-pack. Shipyard American Pale Ale joins Export Ale, Old Thumper, Monkey Fist IPA, Shipyard Light Beer, Shipyard IPA, Blue Fin Stout and Chamberlain Pale Ale in brewer’s core stable. Shipyard Brewing—ranked as the 15th-largest craft brewer in the U.S. by the Brewers Association—has annual production of more than 166,000 barrels.
•California’s Coronado Brewing Company has partnered with Origlio Beverage to enter the Philadelphia market this month. Starting March 31, Origlio will launch Coronado’s year-round Islander IPA, Orange Ave. Wit, Mermaid’s Red, Blue Ridge Coffee Stout and Idiot IPA, as well as the brewer’s seasonal offerings, into the greater Philadelphia region. Specializing in West Coast-style ales, Coronado Brewing currently has a 17-state footprint, following its recent entry into Massachusetts in February.
