Craft Brewing and Distilling News for May 7, 2014

•Chico, California-based Sierra Nevada is projecting around 8% sales growth this year, following a 4% advance in 2013 and a 12% uptick in 2012. Sierra Nevada founder Ken Grossman said in a recent interview with North Carolina’s Times-News that growth was constrained slightly last year because the company’s new North Carolina brewery came online a bit later than planned, and its original Chico brewery is already operating at capacity. Sierra Nevada’s Torpedo Extra IPA earned Impact “Hot Brand” honors for 2013, rising 18% to 2.4 million (2.25-gallon) cases.

•Escondido, California’s Stone Brewing has re-released its Smoked Porter w/ Chipotle Peppers. First created in 2006 to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, the 5.9%-abv cult favorite is made with Magnum and Mt. Hood hops, as well as chipotle peppers. After its initial run, Smoked Porter w/ Chipotle Peppers re-appeared in 2012, making a nationwide debut alongside sister offering Stone Smoked Porter w/ Vanilla Bean, and the specialty brew will now be available again in limited quantities of 22-ounce bottles and on draft. Smoked Porter w/ Chipotle Peppers is a twist on Stone Brewing’s core Stone Smoked Porter, part of the brewer’s 10-label year-round portfolio.
