Craft Brewing and Distilling News for October 27, 2014
October 27, 2014•In a deal with Southern Wine & Spirits, Tennessee-based Sugarlands Distilling Co. will begin distributing its lineup of seven Sugarlands Shine whiskies in Illinois for the first time. Its expressions include Silver Cloud (a 100-proof Tennessee Sour Mash), Blockader’s Blackberry, Butterscotch Gold and Old-Fashioned Lemonade. Illinois will mark the ninth state for distribution of Sugarlands in an arc extending from Florida to Minnesota. The company has set its sights on extending distribution next to Texas, Colorado and California, management says. The name is derived from the sprawling forests of sugar maple trees surrounding the craft distiller’s headquarters in Gatlinburg.
•Knoxville, Tennessee-based The Casual Pint is looking to expand its craft beer market franchise across the U.S. The company currently has six stores operating in East Tennessee with plans for several more to open outside the state this quarter. The Casual Pint bills itself as a craft beer “market” rather than a traditional bar or retailer, focusing on take-home beer sales, growlers and kegs with a dedicated bar area featuring a rotating 22-tap wall. Stores typically stock at least 400 varieties including internationals, seasonal beers brewed exclusively for The Casual Pint and locally brewed varieties that vary from store to store. The first unit opened in 2011 and the following year the company began franchising, with the first two franchised locations opening this year.
•San Diego’s Green Flash Brewing is releasing a pair of draft-only offerings—Soul Style IPA and Jibe Session IPA—next month. A 6.5%-abv single IPA, Soul Style is made with Citra, Simcoe and Cascade hops, while Jibe Session is a 4%-abv entry brewed with Simcoe, Cascade and Amarillo hops. Both will be available year-round on tap nationwide. Concurrently, Green Flash has unveiled its new Discovery Pack, featuring four 12-ounce bottles of West Coast IPA, two bottles of Double Stout and two bottles of Hop Head Red IPA. Green Flash Brewing, which expects to produce around 65,000 barrels of beer at its San Diego headquarters next year, is currently building a second brewery in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
•San Diego, California-based Pizza Port Brewing Company is expanding beyond its home state with entry into the Nevada market through Southern Wine & Spirits. Rolling out to the on- and off-premise in Las Vegas and Reno will be the brewery’s Chronic Ale, Swami’s India Pale Ale and Ponto Sessionable India Pale Ale. More styles are expected to follow the initial release, which began this month. Pizza Port operates five brewpubs throughout Southern California.
