Joe Wagner Reveals Plans For 500,000-Case Winery In Sonoma County
February 4, 2015Joe Wagner, whose Copper Cane Wines & Provisions produces the fast-rising Meiomi Pinot Noir brand, is planning to develop a new half-million-case winery in Sonoma County. The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that the new facility will be located on Highway 12 between Santa Rosa and Sebastopol, on a 68-acre former dairy already owned by Wagner.
In addition to its winemaking capabilities, the proposed winery would also have capacity for 250,000 gallons (100,000 cases) of spirits production. The project would include 76,000 square feet of wine and spirits production space, as well as a tasting room, hospitality area and offices. According to the Press Democrat, the proposition is running into some early opposition from locals who claim its size is too ambitious for the rural area. Wagner responded that he intends to “better the property,” and looks forward to “the day I can bring people out there to see.”
Wagner’s Meiomi brand has seen explosive growth in recent years, leading the winemaker to explore new production avenues. According to Impact Databank, Meiomi hit 550,000 cases in 2014, up from 115,000 cases in 2011. Copper Cane’s other wine brands include Napa-sourced Carne Humana, as well as Elouan from Oregon.
