China’s Decline Hampers 2014 Bordeaux Wine Exports
March 26, 2015China’s austerity crackdown and a sharply reduced 2013 wine grape harvest contributed substantially to Bordeaux wine sales sinking in 2014. Total Bordeaux wines sales last year decreased by 8% to 685 million bottles, according to the Bordeaux Wine Council (CIVB).
The French market, accounting for 58% of overall Bordeaux sales, decreased 6% in 2014. Meanwhile, Bordeaux exports fell by 9%. Category exports to China, Bordeaux’s largest export market, declined by approximately 20% last year. Amid China’s austerity campaign, Bordeaux wines are ceding share to less expensive offerings from Australia and Chile. Bordeaux exports to the U.S.—the region’s sixth-largest export market—declined by 3%. Bordeaux accounts for nearly 40% of France’s global wine exports.
