Connecticut Eases License Limits, Extends Store Hours For Liquor Retailers

Connecticut has loosened some of its laws governing retail alcohol sales along with its latest state budget. The number of liquor licenses permitted per person will rise from three to four this July, with that number increasing to five on July 1, 2016.

The changes mark a partial victory for Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy and backers of retail law liberalization, such as Total Wine & More, which had initially sought even longer hours of operation, as well as the legalization of discounting down to the actual cost of a bottle.

Among other changes, effective July 1, liquor stores will be allowed to add an additional hour of operation—pushing mandatory closing time back to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and to 6 p.m. on Sunday—and 64-ounce growler sales will be legal.
