Cape Classics Bolsters French Stable With Burgundy’s Philippe Pacalet
July 15, 2015New York-based wine importer and marketer Cape Classics, best known for its portfolio of South African wines, has moved aggressively to diversify lately. Today, the group tells SND it has expanded its presence in French wine with an agreement to import Burgundy’s Philippe Pacalet Wines.
Cape Classics will handle a selection of Pacalet’s range nationwide except for California, Texas, Oregon and Massachusetts. (Since parting ways with former agent Louis/Dressner Selections, Pacalet has used multiple U.S. importers in recent years.) The Pacalet wines now moving to Cape Classics include Chablis 1er Cru Beauroy ($90 retail), Pommard ($95), Gevrey-Chambertin ($100), Nuits-Saint-Georges Rouge ($105), Chassagne-Montrachet ($120), Puligny-Montrachet ($125) and Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru ($185).
Philippe Pacalet joins a Cape Classics French wine portfolio that includes the Loire’s Domaine Vincent Careme, Clos du Gaimont, Domaine Grosbois, Domaine Paul Buisse and Le Roi des Pierres, as well as the Rhône’s Pierre Dupond La Renjardière, among others. Cape Classics chairman and CEO André Shearer recently told SND that France, Spain and Portugal are of particular interest as the company looks to continue diversifying its range.
